OpenAI Challenges Google and Meta Ads With ChatGPT Advertising Platform
OpenAI has entered the digital advertising arena, launching sponsored content on its ChatGPT platform in January 2026. The MOVE targets free and $8/month ChatGPT Go users across its 800 million weekly active user base. Ads appear as clearly labeled sponsored snippets below chatbot responses, commanding a premium $60 CPM—nearly double Google's average rate.
The rollout remains exclusive to enterprise partners through direct deals, bypassing self-serve platforms like Google Ads or Meta's systems. Initial analytics provide only basic impression and click data, lacking the conversion tracking and demographic tools that mature platforms offer. Premium subscribers ($20-$200/month) and minors are excluded from ad exposure entirely.
Analysts at Needham & Company project this could evolve into a $20 billion annual revenue stream within five years. The contextual ad model differs fundamentally from search engines—instead of displaying multiple links, ChatGPT surfaces single, targeted sponsored responses aligned with user queries.
